Vitamin D, also known as the "sunshine" vitamin, is a yellow crystalline substance without taste or odor. It belongs to the fat-soluble vitamins, along with vitamins A, E, and K. There are two primary forms of vitamin D, cholecalciferol (D3) and ergocalciferol (D2). Its main function is to regulate calcium absorption, meaning that vitamin D delivers calcium into the bloodstream and transports it to the bones, where the calcium is then utilized. In addition, it maintains normal heart function, stabilizes the nervous system, and plays a small role in insulin secretion control.
