Vitamin K is the name for a group of fat-soluble compounds that play a role in blood clotting. The most important one in this group is phylloquinone, also known as phytomenadione or vitamin K1. Phylloquinone is a yellow oil produced by plants, but there are other forms of vitamin K as well. Some bacteria in the bodies of animals and humans produce these other forms of vitamin K, and they have the same activity as phylloquinone. The most significant of these forms is called menaquinone-7 or vitamin K2.
