There are three branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), and they are: leucine, valine, and isoleucine. BCAAs are considered essential because, unlike other amino acids, they cannot be produced in the human body and can only be obtained through our diet.

There are a total of nine essential amino acids, but BCAAs make up 35% of all essential amino acids found in muscle proteins.
